The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Farming in Samia Subcounty

The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Farming Project:

The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) project falls under the Youth Income Cluster of Action (YIOCA), which is one of ABEDEV’s four Strategic Interventions identified in its 2025-2029 Strategy. The BSF project emerged out of conversations which youth held on the state of hygiene in public markets across Samia subcounty. During the conversations, youth identified an opportunity in turning the garbage within these markets into animal, poultry and fish feed and organic fertilizer.

ABEDEV approached a local social enterprise, Hydro Victoria, which is based in Port Victoria, and requested capacity in the BSF technology, which was the most appropriate in turning organic waste found in markets across Samia subcounty into animal, poultry and fish feed as well as organic fertilizer. In June 2025, Hydro Victoria trained a total of 50 young women (18-35) mobilized by ABEDEV across the four wards in Samia subcounty on BSF skills. It further provided equipment and initial inputs to the young women who were organised into 4 ward-based BSF groups.

By December 2025, the four groups are actively engaged in BSF production in their four wards. Once fully implemented, the project is expected to create income opportunities for youth across Samia, improve the entrepreneurship skills of the target youth, generate organic animal, poultry and fish feed as well as organic fertilizer which will boost food production in the subcounty and conserve the environment around public markets by recycling of waste in line with the principles of circular economy. With additional funding and capacity, the project will be scaled and replicated at the village level where it will reach more deserving youth.
